Resource Management at PennyPinchers

Requirements

PennyPinchers required an enterpise resource management solution for the existing Microsoft server and desktop environment.

The solution was required to provide end-to-end resource management for the desktop environment, providing the organisation with the required management infrastructure to properly leverage their investment. The solution was also required to provide the necessary management information in order to assist PennyPinchers with enterprise resource planning and service delivery.

In order to achieve this, PennyPinchers selected the Novell ZENworks technology. ICE Consulting provided the necessary consulting, project management and technical skills in order to successfully implement the solution.

Approach

Through our engagement methodology, ICE Consulting identified and designed the required solution components, including Active Directory and eDirectory integration, Desktop Management, Patch Management and Asset Management.

Outcome

PennyPinchers was provided with a solution that met and surpassed the initial requirements.

The successful implementation within the PennyPinchers environment has provided “sister” companies with a prototype of functionality for their own environments

Identity and Access Management at Cape Peninsula University of Technology

Requirements

As a result of the merging of the former Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon institutions, the newly formed Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) was faced with the mammoth task of merging IT systems, which included the existing Novell eDirectory and Novell GroupWise systems.

Additionally, a provisioning solution for the automated creation of student accounts within the new Novell eDirectory and Novell GroupWise systems was required.

Approach

ICE Consulting assisted CPUT with the design of the new Novell eDirectory hierarchy and provisioning solution through a number of facilitated workshops. This process resulted in a clear understanding by all parties of both the business and technical requirements of the proposed solution as well as and the architecture of the required environment.

ICE Consulting was, in addition, engaged to implement the identity and access management infrastructure required to facilitate the migration of staff accounts and provisioning of new student records.

Outcome

Through the use of a structured approach and suitable solution architecture, CPUT successfully migrated approximately 1800 staff members from the two existing enviromments to the newly created CPUT Novell eDirectory.

The automated creation of student accounts for Novell eDirectory and Novell GroupWise was also successfully implemented.

The architecture implemented was designed to fulfil the immediate organizational needs as well as providing CPUT with a platform which facilitates the further extension of the provisioning functionality.

Identity and Access Management at Knysna Municipality

Requirements

Knysna Municipality's requirements with respect to Identity Management extended to the ability to use Active Directory user accounts to automatically create user accounts in eDirectory and accompanying mailboxes on a GroupWise system.

Additionally, password synchronization services between Active Directory, eDirectory and GroupWise was required. This needed to be achieved for eDirectory and GroupWise services hosted on a SUSE Linux platform.

Approach

Initially ICE Consulting met with Knysna Municipality and their incumbent service provider in order to confirm the requirements for the immediate solution and Knysna Municipality's vision regarding the longer term requirement for identity services.

This resulted in Ice Consulting being able to construct a comprehensive “to be” architecture which would address Knysna’s immediate and long term requirements.

Outcome

ICE Consulting implemented an Identity Management infrastructure which addressed Knysna’s immediate requirements and placed the Municipality in a position to implement strategic initiatives in order to improve service delivery.

The Identity Management solution which was delivered enabled seamless, policy-driven synchronization of identity and password information between Active Directory, eDirectory and GroupWise, enabling a transparent experience for users across proprietary and open-source platforms.
